Our Kids: Our Business. A Unique Call to Action in Spokane County
Apr 27, 2010, Washington State Models for Change
The symbol of Our Kids: Our Business is the pinwheel. To recognize this event, every April thousands of pinwheels are planted around the community and signs are posted as a reminder of the importance of the prevention of childhood abuse and neglect. All month long various events are held focusing on improving the lives of Spokane’s youth.
This year the campaign’s focus is on mentoring and addressing school drop-out rates. As a result of this new focus; community members are expressing an interest in the Models for Change work currently underway between juvenile court and their school partners. This work focuses on identifying and implementing effective ways to reduce drop out rates, keeping students engaged in school, and providing alternatives to secure detention for youth who do become court involved. High drop out rates are not just a school problem. It is a community issue. Our Kids: Our Business is a call to action for the entire Spokane community.
