MacArthur selects additional states for Juvenile Indigent Defense Action Network

June 2008
Four states (California, Florida, Massachusetts, New Jersey) have been selected to join core Models for Change states (Pennsylvania, Illinois, Louisiana, Washington) in the newly formed Juvenile Indigent Defense Action Network. A key criterion for selecting these four new states was that they had already undertaken demonstrable steps towards addressing juvenile indigent defense issues. Read the announcement,

Call for applications: New Models for Change action network forming to improve young people’s access to and quality of counsel in delinquency proceedings

Models for Change is accepting applications from states to join the newly formed Juvenile Indigent Defense Action Network. The issue of juvenile indigent defense is among the biggest challenges in developing a more fair and effective juvenile justice system. Aimed at improving access to and quality of counsel representing youth in delinquency proceedings nationwide, the network provides a unique opportunity for a large group of states to work together on juvenile indigent defense issues. Annual Meetings

June 2009

Juvenile Indigent Defense Action Network teams will come together in San Francisco to develop implementation strategies. Details TBA.

January 2009

The Juvenile Indigent Defense Action Network held its first Strategic Innovation Group meeting in Miami Beach, January 2009. At this meeting, members came together to work on their strategic innovation work plans. Each state left the meeting having completed a draft work plan for the next two years.

October 2008

The Juvenile Indigent Defense Action Network held its inaugural meeting in October 2008. At the meeting, members identified two principle areas of concentration and collaboration: strategies to improve access to counsel and the creation of state, locla or regional juvenile defender resource centers.
